Formed by glaciers and encircled by mountain peaks and deep green forests, Lake Pend Oreille is Idaho’s largest lake and one of the largest inland lakes in North America. A renowned recreation and fishing mecca with a shoreline of 148 miles, its depth has been measured at more than 1,150 feet. The majority of the perimeter of the lake is uninhabited except for a few small towns such as Sandpoint, Sagle, the Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort, and three golf courses, one of which, The Idaho Club, is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course.
The area is also home to the award-winning Pend d’Oreille Winery. The lake is surrounded by mountain ranges and views are spectacular from all vantage points. To the east are the Green Monarchs, to the north are the Cabinet Mountains, to the southwest the Coeur d’Alene and to the northwest is the Selkirk mountains. During World War II, the Navy had a base near the northern end to test submarine acoustics due to the depth of the water mirroring that of the ocean.
The base has since been turned into a state park, though the Navy retains a testing laboratory at the edge of the lake. Though still an unspoiled area without the heavy tourist traffic seen by most resort areas, Sandpoint and the surrounding area is filled with world-famous artists, galleries, antique stores, shopping, and restaurants.
Now for sale on over 48 gated acres is a large compound sited on a cliff above Lake Pend Oreille with six dwellings and a combined 17,000 square feet. A total of nine bedrooms (one a bunk room with a living area that sleeps eight) and fourteen baths. In addition to having some of the most beautiful views of the lake and its own marina, the buildings are full of character with their red metal lifetime roofs and their use of natural stone, reclaimed barn wood and logs, hand-rubbed beams, custom-designed tiles, hand-finished copper and nickel, custom cabinetry, a total of seven massive stone fireplaces and a rare collection of local artifacts.
The warmth of the wood, boldness of rock, and even the fabrics used to recall the Native American heritage of the area and many of the artifacts recall its first settlers. With plenty of acreage and room for extended family and friends, it is possible to host many outdoor watersports, hiking, trail riding, and winter ski trips. The exterior has a large infinity pool and spa overlooking the lake, outdoor fireplaces, expansive decks, scenic pastures, stable, orchard, gardens, and three fabulous Black Angus bull sculptures in the pasture that appear to be chewing their cud and passing the time away in the sunshine.
