A gorgeous home on the shores of Malibu Beach, California – once owned by actor Steve McQueen – was listed for sale in November of 2022. The expansive beachside residence costs several times the average home in the U.S., with a current sticker price of $16.995 million dollars. That’s a significant jump over its 2021 sale price of $12.114 million dollars, but the appeal of the home and the state of the market mean the final price likely won’t budge far from the mark.

More about the McQueen Malibu Mansion
McQueen’s Malibu Beach home was relatively new when he bought it near the height of his career. Architectural choices prominently show the style of architect Hugh Kaptur, who was responsible for many homes and larger buildings in the Palm Springs area throughout the middle of the 20th century. The residence stayed in the family well after McQueen’s death in 1980, but it was finally sold by McQueen’s son in 2020.
Since then, it has passed hands a couple times before reentering the market at its current price in late 2022.
At 4,335 square feet with four rooms, that puts each foot of the home at close to $4,000 dollars. Bigger homes are available for less with fewer neighbors nearby, but they aren’t right on Malibu Beach. The home itself isn’t cut from the same cloth as other buildings, with staggered layers trailing from the roadside main entrance to the beach several stories below.
The middle modern design doesn’t feature any oddities sometimes seen in expensive custom builds, balancing delicately on the edge of innovation and tradition.
Over 4,000 square feet isn’t a small home, either, and an open design seen throughout the home enhances the feeling of spaciousness. Two of the five bathrooms are cozy spas with wide windows that gaze out onto the ocean even while the weather isn’t suitable for sitting out on the beach. The wide balcony has room for several people to gaze out at the Pacific while catching a lighter dose of sunshine.
Even the primary bedroom has a sprawling window that shows the California sunset every night.
As might be expected from a home owned by McQueen, the garage in the mansion has enough space for three typical automobiles. For anyone who likes to both work inside their garage while having enough room to not leave their vehicles out at night, the sizable vehicle docking is a pleasant feature. Similarly to the overall space, it is possible to find cheaper homes with bigger garages, but few of those will let the owner dip down to the beach after getting out of mechanic rags.
Who is Steve McQueen?
Throughout the 60s and 70s, Steve McQueen was an actor who formed a legacy on and off screen that kept his name as a nearly mythical example of the “bad boy on a motorcycle” persona in American culture for decades afterward. He died in 1980 due to complications from mesothelioma, an infamous form of cancer caused by asbestos insulation. Although time has made his name a less common invocation, classic films like The Magnificent Seven and The Thomas Crown Affair are worth the watch.
