Bathroom windows require a little more thought and planning than windows in other rooms in your home. While you want as much natural light as possible, you also want to ensure privacy.

This means you’ll want to consider the view of each bathroom from outside and from all angles, especially from angles where other people may be such as neighbors, passers-by all while taking advantage of letting in the most amount of light.

Options for privatizing windows:

If you have close neighbors, you can always

use blinds,
install curtains,
use sanded glass/stained glass which brings in light but people can’t see the details, and/or
place the window high up in the room.

I’m not big on sanded glass because it also means you can’t really see outside.

In my view, if you will need to close up your bathroom window, blinds are the best option because they look good and are very easy to open and close and you can still enjoy the view.

Bathroom window placement

Often you don’t have a lot of window placement options because it’s rare to place a window in a shower or above bathroom sinks or next to a toilet. This leaves very little wall space for a window.

That said, our gallery below does include examples of windows next to a bathtub and even in a shower. If you go with a window in the shower or next to a tub you definitely want to ensure there’s sufficient privacy.

Other bathroom window design considerations:

Frame color
Window size
Number of frames
Frame material
Number of panes
Does it open/close and if so, is it sliding or swinging?
Shape: Bay or flat?
Glass type: Regular, brushed, block glass?

1. Glass Block Windows

Glass block windows were popular in the 1980’s. While I’m not a big fan, they are a viable bathroom option because they offer light while protecting privacy.

2. Large Window with Roll-Down Blinds (Next to a Tub)

Any bathroom window can be made private with any type of blind. This bathroom uses a roll-down blind which is not quite as convenient as regular blinds.

3. Classic 3-Frame Window Next to Bathtub

When possible, placing a window next to a tub is a nice touch. In this case you can tell there is sufficient privacy that this window need not have blinds.

4. Large Bay Window with Valiance Next to Tub

For the elegant touch go for a bay window next to a tub. It’s fairly ornate but if that’s your style, it works.

5. Pair of Corner Windows with Blinds Wrapping Around the Tub

I like this simple window look. White-framed windows with white blinds framing the freestanding tub.

6. Wood Framed Window Next to Tub with Roll-Down Blind

Here’s another example of a roll-down blind on window next to a tub.

7. Floor-to-Ceiling Framed Window Spanning Full Wall Next to Tub

This is a fabulous bathroom window which spans floor to ceiling the entire width of one wall next to the bathtub.

8. Skylight Windows in Attic Bathroom

Skylights are a good bathroom lighting option although in this case I’m not sure they provide much privacy unless this is the tallest building around.

9. Large Plate-Glass Windows from Tub to Ceiling

I love plate-glass and this is a great example of one wrapping around a corner tub.

10. Ship-Style Round Window with Wooden Frame

For the ship-theme, go for a round bathroom window.

11. Window Placed High Up on the Wall for Bathroom Privacy

Placing a bathroom window high up is a great way to get light and have privacy. This is an excellent example.

12. Bathroom Shower with Window

Here’s an example of a shower with a window. It’s not typical, but if there’s sufficient privacy it’s a very cool bathroom feature.

13. Arched Windows Flanking Bathtub

If you like the Mediterranean style, arched windows provide that in a bathroom.

14. Traditional White-Framed Windows Wrapping Around Bathtub

I absolutely love these bathroom windows. I like the white-framed windows and the fact there are so many of them surrounding the tub. Look at how much light they let in the bathroom.

15. Massive Peak Window with Rustic Wood Frame Next to Bathtub

This is a spectacular bathroom window. It’s a peak design next to a tub. It’s so large it makes the large tub look small.

16. Stained Glass Window in Bathroom

Stained glass is a bathroom window option because it looks great, lets in light and protects privacy.

I love large windows which give a modern look. This one does that in spades.

This bathroom was well designed because the outside wall provides an excellent place for a large window that still protects privacy (for the most part).

There’s not much to dislike about a bathing solarium. While a bit dated, this is awesome.

21. Flat 3-Frame Window Spanning Length of Bathtub

I like this window how it sits above a ledge which provides a place for bathroom needs next to the tub. The window is placed in a nook which provides the bathroom depth. A really nice feature.

Again, skylights in bathrooms are a good window solution. This works really well.

Corner bathtubs are ideal for windows on 2 sides like the one here. The blinds provide privacy.

With a long built-in bathroom counter, the designer was able to place a window above the counter next to the sink.

30. Large Modern Bathroom with Floor-to-Ceiling Windows

If you have the privacy, there’s nothing like a full wall of floor-to-ceiling windows in your bathroom. Being on the water, this home can do this. It’s spectacular. It is odd, howeve,r that the bathroom is situated in the primary bathroom. I’ve seen this before. In fact, I lived in a home where the bathroom was placed openly in the primary bedroom.

Rarely do you find a bathroom with a door to the outside. This is one of them and the door is all glass. In fact, one entire wall is a window. It’s really cool if you have the privacy.
