This showcases a remarkable transformation of a 2,500 sq. ft. apartment in New York City by Studio ST Architects.
As you’ll see in the series of before and after photos below, Studio ST turned this gloomy but spacious apartment into a comfortable and stylish mid-century modern apartment with 5 bedrooms, a den, living room, dining room and kitchen. The entire apartment was renovated extensively.
Key Takeaways
- This renovation focused on accommodating a growing family of five emphasizing flexibility.
- Spatial adjustments, like relocating the entrance and adding pocket doors, enhanced both privacy and flow.
- Aesthetics pay homage to midcentury modern design, ensuring a stylish and timeless look.
Renovated Apartment Layout
I have to admit that the 2,500 sq. ft. is very well laid out. Every sq. ft. carefully considered given there’s five bedrooms, three bathrooms, den, walk-in closets, eat-in kitchen plus spacious living room and dining room.
The main space change was moving the entry area. The former large entry area was converted to a den which essentially added another room. Other than that, this apartment makeover was mostly achieved with paint, furniture and furnishings (other than the kitchen and bathrooms which were totally gutted… big jobs).
Before and After Comparisons
Here’s a series of direct before and after comparison photos of this apartment.
The kitchen was gutted to make way for contemporary white cabinetry, new backsplash, appliances, flooring… the whole shebang. Huge improvement.
The new den (above right) is my favorite room in the new apartment. Formerly, the oversized entry way, Studio ST converted that space into a useful den space.
The dining area in the former design was in the same space (behind the sofa in the above left photo). The new dining room, while simple is a considerable improvement. The main space featured in the above left photo is where the new den is located.
The former living room was dated. The new living room incorporates stylish new mid-century modern inspired furniture and furnishings. It’s still simple without too much clutter yet provides plenty of seating for everyone.
The old bathroom was old. It wasn’t actually terrible with the blue tile floor and subway tile but it’s crammed and dated. The new as you can see incorporates floor-to-ceiling improvements.
The renovated bedroom embraces mid-century modern considerably with the night table and bed. Again, simple, not cluttered but stylish.
