This gallery showcases the Casa das Gerais project, a modern Brazilian home designed by Denise Macedo Architects.
A unifying concept in the design of this home was for a large open space conducive to contemplation. The owners wanted to host a plethora of contemporary art in a gorgeous, natural setting. The home’s structure is so thoroughly open that it shares its interior visual space with the mountains and valleys of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.
The project harmonizes two important needs: large, area for the exhibition of art, and full glass facades blurring the line between landscape and interior. The architects created a gallery 14 feet by 6 feet with double height ceiling, offering an exhibition area of 190 square meters.
The left wall of the gallery enabled the creation of a ramp 28 meters long, promoting movement surrounded by works of art and spectacular natural views.
The choice of construction materials reflects an ethos of simplicity, an important characteristic for the owners. This strategy is thoroughly demarcated by the apparent color of the metal structure of iron ore, plentiful in this region known for mining.
The burnt cement floors and white walls with special washable paint, including baths and kitchen, are free of any coating. Counter tops are white Corian, which mimics the walls and the woodwork in white lacquer. This is all designed with the intention of subtly highlighting the artwork, looking beautiful while not drawing attention.
The entire project is transparent, figuratively and literally, showing its true design from any angle. The purity of design is absolutely stunning.
Resting atop this manicured slope, the minimalist, transparent structure blends sharp lines with natural surroundings. From here we can see the main gallery and living room spaces.
The upper level balcony features glass railings for thoroughly open views of the surrounding mountainous terrain. Library is seen through windows at right.

Rounding a corner from the gallery, we have the immense dining table with disco-ball vase at center. The exposed beams and concrete throughout contrast with the broad natural views all around.
From the top of the ramp, we see down onto the array of modern leather seating options and the stone path surrounding the home.
Symmetry is achieved in the gallery with a set of black leather chairs on left and corresponding brown leather sofas on right, paired across black oval coffee tables.
The thoroughly modern and minimalist kitchen space comprises a single large L-shaped island with white countertops, while all cooking utensils and dishes are kept in the open on an expanse of white shelving at left.
Looking down the immense ramp, we see artwork adorning the entire wall.
The large beams delineate sections of the home, and provide visual connection throughout the large open spaces. Above, we can see the lights suspended from the concrete ceiling.
The upper level library features this immense low-profile sofa over natural hardwood flooring, with ceiling height bookshelf at right and massive balcony seen through external glass.
Library includes this semi-private office space, with lengthy white desk matching the kitchen decor, paired with a rainbow of wheeled chairs. Single bench runs length of the exterior wall, beneath windows with spectacular, expansive view.

The immense two story gallery room holds a single, minimalist white desk between two full height walls covered in contemporary art. Floor sculpture is a smaller iteration of the piece seen outside the home.
Primary bedroom suite on upper floor continues the natural hardwood flooring, with more art pieces standing on built-in wall shelf. Seamless glass door slides open to private balcony space with blue cushioned wooden rocking sofa.
Primary bath reiterates the minimalist, white theme with floating countertop backed by wall-length mirror, seamless glass shower, and large jacuzzi tub next to balcony access.
View from the window showcases the length of the bathroom, seamless shower space, and natural lighting via the windows peeking above wall-length mirror.
This private relaxing space features more of the natural hardwood flooring, with twin day beds built into white shelving, plus contemporary backless leather sofa, and wall-length entertainment shelf built in. This space features another exit to the balcony.
Private area of the home also holds this children’s bedroom, replete with built-in white bed structure and shelving. Large, colorful art pieces adorn the walls, while drum set stands beside glass patio door.
From the side patio, we see an expanse of hardwood deck flooring, wrapped around an infinity pool with spectacular views for miles.
