Everyone knows that IKEA sells a huge range of products and that most of the company’s furniture is decently priced but not necessarily high in quality. Well, one YouTuber, Furniture Fables by Andy, found a pair of used IKEA dressers that inspired her. In her short video, she shows just how she took this pair of smaller dressers and turned them into one piece, painted and stained by hand to create something truly beautiful and unique.
You can watch this incredible IKEA furniture transformation here:
The Steps
First, she took the two dressers and removed the drawers, then attached them together using a drill and some strong wood screws to hold each piece securely together. Next, she used a sprayer and painted the entire piece with a gorgeous dark black color called Fusions “coal black.”
She decided to give the piece some personality by taking some pieces of pine wood and a miter saw to design a stunning diagonal design for the top. After the pieces of wood were cut, she applied them to the top using a brush and some wood glue.
The tops of the dressers had an inset design, so the diagonally cut wood fit perfectly on the top and created a gorgeous and modern aesthetic. Once the top was complete, she added some matching pine wood trim to the front and the back so that everything looked seamless.
She filled in the gaps using a product called “stainable plastic wood” that looks a lot like the wood putty you can find at most home improvement stores. Note that if you do this step, make sure that the product is listed as “stainable” so it will take the stain. Once the product dried, she sanded everything down so that it had a nice, smooth finish.
For the “raw” wood areas, including the top and legs, she stained it in a warm, rich coffee brown color. She didn’t mention how she created the absolutely jaw-dropping inlays on the front of the dresser that featured a tri-toned look, but I’m assuming she used the same method as the top, just in a different pattern, then stained them in different colors. Deep bronze drawer pull handles were added to help tie everything together.
People Love this Project
A lot of YouTube viewers were really impressed with the outcome, including user MrsHappyville who said, “This looks awesome! There are so many furniture makeovers where I think: “Meh, different but still ugly.” But this is a great piece! I was married to a professional cabinet maker for over a decade, and this has raised my standards by a lot. So, compliments to you.”
Viewer Texican American was also quite impressed, saying, “These pieces are probably the first ones I’ve seen that are perfectly done. They’re not gaudy, they’re not overly finished, and they have a nice simple statement. They can be the focal point or they can be part of the room. Gorgeous and well done!”
I absolutely adore how this YouTuber’s furniture transformation turned out. The combination of black and deep brown with the unique diagonal designs gives this once-boring dresser a sleek, contemporary look. If I had the chance to do something like this myself, I definitely think I would try my hand at it.
Furniture Fables by Andy has certainly inspired me to be a little bit more daring when it comes to the furniture in my home. Maybe I’ll head to IKEA or a few thrift stores and vintage furniture stores this weekend to see what I can find!
