You’re probably quite familiar with the once-trending farmhouse style that seemed to sweep the interior design world just a few years ago. Now, it seems that a new design trend is taking place, although, to me, it seems very similar to the farmhouse style. The trend is called “organic modern,” and one TikTok video explains some of the main elements that are used to create the look. Overall, the idea of organic modern is to find pieces made of natural and sustainable materials while also giving your home a simple, modern look. A related interior design concept is biophilic design.
According to the TikTok user who posted the video, organic modern can also be referred to as “contemporary rustic” or “transitional rustic interiors.” As someone who loves design, I feel like the terms are just a fancier way of saying rustic by adding modern language to the title.
Moving on…the video continues to talk about the main elements that you might find in an organic modern home. She explains that you’ll probably see a lot of things like stone, wood and ceramics, and limewashed walls (which coincidentally have been a huge trend over the last year or so). The video mentions that the new trend is gaining traction because more people are pushing toward sustainability and something called “bio-filled” design. This means that you’ll notice more earthy elements, natural materials, and less clutter. You might also want to sprinkle in a few houseplants for good measure.

Some people had questions about how they could tweak this design to make it a bit different, including paigester0205 who asked,
“I love this but I love color. How would you do while having bright colors? Almost like organic modern + electric”
User HeyitsAnya mentioned that the style is quite similar to the Scandinavian design style, adding:
“Can you make a video on Scandinavian Design? That’s what I’m working on right now and I see a lot of cross elements in these other styles.”
While the idea of using natural materials and sustainable products is always appreciated, it’s definitely not a new concept. Personally. I feel like this new design term is just a rehash of other styles like farmhouse or farmhouse-modern, minimalist, or boho. However, the fact that more younger people are starting to prefer eco-friendly spaces and products is always something to celebrate.
