You know when you watch someone create something and the idea is seemingly so simple, so you say to yourself, “why didn’t I think of that?” Well, this is exactly how I feel about so many of these DIY TikTok videos. I’ve always been a DIY’er myself, and I used to repurpose vintage furniture, and I get a little envious when I see a super unique, mind-blowing transformation happen. It was always so invigorating to take a piece of furniture and transform it into a functional and gorgeous piece. I especially love this TikTok video because it has that ‘Wow’ factor and is creatively inspiring.

The ironic thing is, I was recently envisioning tackling a project similar to this one for my home office. I can attest that, as a designer, having ample storage space is so crucial and this is such a great use of space. It’s hard for me to explain in words, how much built-in cabinets make the designer in me so giddy with joy. I mean, show me any person that would refuse to transform a boring wall into an amazing storage space that also looks incredibly beautiful.
The funny thing is, we all have come across those tired wood cabinets at the local thrift store or Goodwill but never quite know what to do with them. Sure, you can always sand it and paint it to use in your dining room or under the TV for storage. However, this DIY project would take that tired cabinet to another level. On the other hand, if you don’t possess a designer’s eye or have the time to sand an older piece, you can simply purchase inexpensive kitchen cabinets or the IKEA Besta cabinet to use as your base piece. Any bookshelves will do for the top and then it’s all about attaching and securing it to the wall and, of course, painting the cabinet.
I love that the video is filmed in fast motion and obviously really creative, but I also feel there is some important criteria missing. In my opinion, and I have many, what could take this video to the next level is adding information. Knowledge is the key to success, or in this case, it’s the key to understanding where to buy the items and what tools they used to achieve such functional and beautiful built-ins. It would also be helpful if they included the paint color and finishes used. Many TikTok’ers will add labels during each clip, showing key elements used throughout the project. I find this most useful for myself, and it will be super helpful for many who have never attempted a DIY project but feel compelled to give it a shot.
