Windows are more than just glass that allows sunlight and fresh air into our bedrooms — they can actually make a difference in how homey a room feels. If you’re planning your new home or just want to change the windows of your bedroom, there are many options to choose from.
You don’t have to settle for boring, simple windows, but many people don’t realize this. That’s why I decided to make a list of my favorite types of bedroom windows.
Some of these windows aren’t typically used for bedrooms, but who says you can’t have garden windows or jalousie windows in your bedroom? This list is meant to serve as a guide and should get you inspired in no time!
1. Single-Hung Windows
These are pretty straightforward — single-hung windows can open vertically with their lower sash or bottom window panel moving up and down. The upper part remains stationary, so when the lower window is opened, the upper part will be covered on the inside of your bedroom.
These windows are some of the most affordable options to choose from, so if you’re on a tight budget, they can be ideal. They are also really easy to install, so you can get your new bedroom windows in place quickly.
Single-hung bedroom windows are also more secure because they come with locking systems that are less likely to fail.
2. Double-Hung Windows
These windows are very similar to single-hung windows, but with these windows, the lower sash and the upper sash can move down and up. Normally, they also tilt out to make them easy to clean and maintain.
Double-hung windows are quite common and come in many different materials and sizes. You can even get them in custom options if you want to make your bedroom feel a bit more special or unique.
They can be a bit more expensive than single-hung windows but offer better ventilation and are fairly easy to use.
3. Arched Windows
Arched windows are beautiful and one of my favorite types of bedroom windows. Not only do they enhance the architectural design of your home and bedroom, but they also get installed on top of standard windows, allowing even more sun into the room.
Some arched windows can open, and others can’t — it’s up to you to decide which option you prefer. You’ll enjoy a lovely view of the outside and they offer easy air control if you choose the type that can open.
Note that these windows can be rather expensive, so plan your budget accordingly.
4. Awning Windows
If you live in an area that gets lots of rain, you may want to invest in awning windows for your bedroom. In fact, you may even want these windows for your whole home!
These windows create water-resistant awnings when you open them. Awning windows swing open on the outside and you push them outward with the handle or the latch, depending on the design.
Awning windows are easy to clean and ideal for rainy weather. They also look really nice while being quite affordable. Also, they provide even more ventilation than single-hung and standard windows.
5. Bay Windows
Bay windows, another of my favorites, are stunning and although you’ll typically find them in kitchens or living rooms, they can make a fantastic addition to bedrooms.
With these windows, you get a wonderful view of your yard and they add something special to the bedroom as well. If you want, you can use your bay window as a little reading or relaxing nook, which is why I love them so much.
However, bay windows can be very expensive to install and, because they’re so unique and big, you’ll need to get a professional to install them for you.
6. Bow Windows
If you want something really interesting in your bedroom, bow windows are just the thing. These windows rely on custom-curved windows to create a circular area on the outside of your bedroom. Much like bay windows, they also offer you a wonderful view of your yard.
Bow windows are quite big and use a lot of window space (which I think is good!) while also giving your home a Victorian look and feel. This can also help increase the value of your house.
As you might expect, these windows can be expensive to install and require someone with the right skills to install.
7. Casement Windows
Casement windows are pretty standard and swing up or to the side when opened. For this reason, the windows can be made of solid glass, giving you a nice and unobstructed view. They’re also pretty low-maintenance, but have a few size limitations you’ll have to keep in mind.
Casement windows can add value to your home and offer fantastic fresh air and ventilation for your bedroom.
Depending on the design of the windows and where you buy them, these windows fall in the mid-range when it comes to pricing.
8. Garden Windows
If you’re a plant lover or looking to add more plants to your bedroom to make it look and feel more refreshing and natural, you’ll love garden windows. These windows are basically like mini bay windows meant for plants.
They act like small greenhouses that extend from the bedroom into your yard and bring lots of sunshine into your bedroom. Also, they give you a nice view of your garden while allowing you to take a bit of your garden inside.
Garden windows can be quite expensive to install and you’ll need to hire a professional to do the installation, though.
9. Glass Block Windows
Anyone looking to make their bedroom (and home) more unique and add more light and privacy to their space should consider installing glass block windows. These are more like accents than standard windows and are added to the house for increased air and light flow.
Glass block windows are usually adorned with unique and beautiful patterned designs or frosted, which is why I really love them for the bedroom, although you’ll typically find them in bathrooms and private spaces.
It’s best to install these windows in addition to others that can open because they can’t be opened, though they do have small vents built into them.
10. Picture Windows
Do you have a stunning view from your home or a beautiful backyard that deserves to be seen all day and night? Then you should install picture windows in your bedroom. Although they are fixed windows that can’t be opened, they allow in a lot of sunshine and give you unobstructed, picturesque views.
You should install these windows along with standard windows so you can still get enough ventilation and fresh air in your bedroom. Picture windows can be a bit more expensive than normal windows, depending on how big they are.
11. Circle Windows
Circle windows are yet another type of unique window that enhances the appearance of a home and give your bedroom an interesting look. You can choose to have half-round, round, oval, or elliptical windows and they add Victorian and Gothic vibes to a space.
You can combine these windows with other types of windows to allow enough light and air into your bedroom.
Mostly, these windows only serve an aesthetic purpose and can vary in price depending on their size and designs. Still, there are manufacturers that ensure their circle windows allow enough ventilation.
12. Skylight Windows
Skylight windows are awesome if you want to add more natural light to your bedroom, but don’t really have many options with your exterior walls. Basically, they are windows on your roof, and they look really great while giving your bedroom a unique feel. Plus, you get to see the sky at all times, and who won’t love that?
You can choose between moveable and fixed skylight windows, depending on whether you want to allow for ventilation. You can also install electric skylight windows, which you can open and close with just the push of a button.
Skylight windows are installed the same way roof vents are, so you’ll need a skilled professional to do them, and they can be quite costly.
13. Jalousie Windows
This is another very unique type of bedroom window that splits into different slats of glass or metal, depending on your design choice. Basically, the windows are like blinds, and they open like a set of blinds.
You’ll have to crank the provided lever so that the slats tilt to the side, creating gaps that allow air and light to flow through. If you want to give your bedroom a nice and breezy feel, this is the kind of window you should install.
Jalousie windows aren’t very expensive to install and are ideal for warmer climates as they enhance the ventilation of rooms and bring in fresh air.
14. Sliding Windows
If you’ve got some elongated wall space, you could install sliding windows in your bedroom. These window options have two sashes made up of single windows. One of the sections will slide horizontally over the top of the other slide to open up or close.
You can make your bedroom look and feel a lot bigger if you install big sliding windows while also allowing lots of sunlight and air into your room.
Typically, installing these windows can be a bit expensive and, since they’re rather big, they don’t come cheaply.
15. Custom Windows
If you have a generous budget and space on your bedroom walls, you can really do just about anything when it comes to windows. If you have a specific design or preference in mind that doesn’t get addressed by the windows you can buy, custom windows are what you need. These windows can be made in all the sizes and shapes you desire, but are quite costly, as you might expect.
