Neil Patrick Harris was just 16 years old when he was cast in Doogie Howser, M.D., a comedic drama about a teenage prodigy. Since then, the actor has had the opportunity to take on all kinds of roles, playing womanizer Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother and appearing as Desi Collings in David Fincher’s hit psychological thriller Gone Girl.
In addition to appearing on the screen, Harris has spent time on the stage, even winning a Tony award when he played the lead in the Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. When Harris and his husband, professional chef David Burtka, moved to New York City in 2013, they purchased a beautiful brownstone in Harlem.

Harris and Burtka purchased the 8,000-square-foot, five-story property for $3,582,000. After moving in, the couple went to great lengths to restore the brownstone, working with interior designer Trace Lehnhoff and architect Jeffrey Povero. When they decided to move on, the property was listed for $7.325 million and sold for a neighborhood record-breaking $7.1 million.
Built in 1908, the five-bedroom, the six-bathroom property is filled with appealing details, including 12-foot ceilings, carefully restored original woodwork, and rooms filled with natural light. In the home’s primary bedroom you’ll find features like a walk-in closet, gas fireplace, and a private outdoor terrace with a spacious hot tub. The five-piece primary bathroom has a double vanity and a stunning marble bathtub that’s perfect for soaking.
As you might expect, the brownstone also has an impressive kitchen equipped with cutting-edge appliances and a spacious pantry. Like the primary bedroom, the kitchen is connected to its own terrace, which spans 500 feet. The home also has a distinctive vintage bar that was fully restored after being sourced from an old hotel.
This property was designed with entertaining in mind, but it was also made to be a functional living space. It has a full basement that includes a gym and a children’s playroom. The brownstone also has a wine cellar, home theater, music room, and a spacious garden-floor office, which Harris used as an in-home production studio.
Inside the wonderfully decorated office is a vintage poster of a magician. If you press down on the magician’s eyeball, it opens a trick door that leads to another, secret office. This hidden room was installed at Harris’ request and is home to magic props, posters, and other memorabilia.
Not only is the interior of the home spacious, but it has 2,000 square feet of outdoor living space, including a terraced garden and a rooftop deck with a wood pergola and a built-in grill. The property is also in a prime location, located just one block away from Harlem’s famous 125th Street. Parks, restaurants, and hotspots like the Apollo Theater, are just steps away.
This stunning brownstone is anything but cookie-cutter. From top to bottom, it’s filled with unique features that can’t be found in any other property in New York. It’s an absolutely lovely property located in any even lovelier neighborhood.
