Joan Rivers passed away on Sept. 4, 2014, and her New York City penthouse, located on the Upper East Side of the Big Apple, was purchased by a Middle Eastern buyer for $28 million, but it is now back on the market with a price tag of $38 million.
The woman is known for her zingy one-liners in her stand-up comedy performances and the author of twelve books also decorated this amazing penthouse. The historic home was originally decorated for socialites John and Alice Troth Drexel in 1903 by Horace Trumbauer.
Joan Rivers purchased the penthouse that boasts French architecture after the death of her husband, Edgar Rosenberg, in 1987 when she sold her Los Angeles home. It is believed that she focused on decorating the lavish home while dealing with the grief over losing her husband.
This gorgeous four-bedroom triplex penthouse has amazing views of Central Park as well as a private elevator entry hall that leads to a two-story gallery with an adjoining living room. It also sports several wood-burning fireplaces, a paneled library, a formal dining room that features 18-century French panels, and a gorgeous terrace.
Along with parquet-d e-Versailles flooring and 23-foot high ceilings, this amazing penthouse includes large spaces to entertain friends and family, such as a large ballroom and a music room, both adorned with large, beautiful antique columns.
Joan Rivers loved her home, the amazing views, and entertaining her celebrity friends, including the late Princess Diana, but there was one thing that she did not love in the home which was a ghost.
It was believed to have been the ghost of the former owner, Mrs. Spencer, who was normally pretty quiet but according to Joan, the ghost once bit the cherubs off of a chandelier. Along with bringing in a Voodoo Priestess from Louisiana to attempt to get rid of the ghost, Joan cleaned up a painting of Mrs. Spencer she found in the basement to make the ghost happy and hung it in the hallway of the penthouse.
This amazing home with so much history is on the market currently for $38 million by Jenny Lenz of Dolly Lenz Real Estate in New York City.
